Everyone deserves to feel connected to their community. For many NDIS participants, community access supports make that possible by opening the door to social activities, new interests and friendships.
What are community access supports?
Community access supports help participants take part in activities outside the home. That might be joining a social group, going to a sports or hobby class, visiting the library, shopping or attending local events. The support worker's role is to help the participant take part in the way they choose.
Why community access matters
- Confidence: Trying new things builds confidence and independence.
- Connection: Meeting people and joining groups helps reduce isolation.
- Skills: Everyday activities such as using public transport or managing money help build daily living skills.
- Choice: Participants decide what they want to do and when.
What good community access support looks like
The best support is built around the participant, not a fixed program. A good provider will:
- Ask what interests and goals the participant has
- Match a support worker who suits their personality and interests
- Provide reliable transport or help with getting there
- Adjust activities as needs and interests change
- Keep families and support coordinators informed
Tips to get the most from your supports
- Start with something you enjoy, and try new activities gradually.
- Tell your provider what worked well and what did not.
- Set a goal, such as joining a group or learning to travel independently.
- Review your supports regularly so they keep matching your goals.
